A Comprehensive Look at Financial Volatility Prediction by Economic Variables, March 2012

چکیده
We investigate if asset return volatility is predictable by macroeconomic and financial variables and shed light on the economic drivers of financial volatility. Our approach is distinct due to its comprehensiveness: First, we employ a data-rich forecast methodology to handle a large set of potential predictors in a Bayesian Model Averaging approach, and, second, we take a look at multiple asset classes (equities, foreign exchange, bonds, and commodities) over long time spans. We find that proxies for credit risk and funding (il)liquidity consistently show up as common predictors of volatility across asset classes. Variables capturing time-varying risk premia also perform well as predictors of volatility. While forecasts by macro-finance augmented models also achieve forecasting gains out-ofsample relative to autoregressive benchmarks, the performance varies across asset classes and over time. A Neural-Network Approach to the Modeling of the Impact of Market Volatility on Investment
In recent years, authors have focused on modeling and forecasting volatility in financial series it is crucial for the characterization of markets, portfolio optimization and asset valuation. One of the most used methods to forecast market volatility is the linear regression. Nonetheless, the errors in prediction using this approach are often quite high. Hence, continued research is conducted t...

This paper investigates directional relationships, regime variances, transition probabilities and expected regime durations for a system of economic and financial risk variables in the U.S. markets. The system is based on monthly data, and encompasses credit, and market risks and economic activity variables. The methodology is based on the Markov-Switching cointegrated VAR model and their impul...

In this study, we examine the relations between the three keys variables of liquidity such as trading volume, bid-ask spread, and intraday price volatility. Hausman’s (1978) tests of specification confirmed that trading volume, bid-ask spread and intraday price volatility are jointly determined. Our study, leaded with a different approach to estimate the three parameters in a three-equation sim...
متن کاملA Nonlinear Model of Economic Data Related to the German Automobile Industry
Prediction of economic variables is a basic component not only for economic models, but also for many business decisions. But it is difficult to produce accurate predictions in times of economic crises, which cause nonlinear effects in the data. Such evidence appeared in the German automobile industry as a consequence of the financial crisis in 2008/09, which influenced exchange rates and a...
متن کاملA Longitudinal Analysis of the Stability of Household Money Demand
Past aggregate time-series studies, conducted under the assumption of a representative economic agent, frequently show that the demand for narrowly defined M1, especially non-interest-yielding demand deposit, is unstable during periods of financial innovations. Whether this is longitudinally the case among life-cycle savers is unclear. This study utilizes longitudinal data to take another look ...
